Strabismus Treatment

Strabismus is the name given to the condition where the pupils are not parallel to each other. This condition, which can negatively affect vision, is treated using different methods.

What causes Strabismus?

There are many reasons behind Strabismus:

- Genetic reasons

- Diabetes

- Eye drift in children who have high eye degree

- Brain tumors

- Excessive fluid accumulation in and around the brain

- The disease that mother had during pregnancy

- Cerebral palsy

- Trauma, accident and inflammatory diseases which had during childhood

- Down syndrome and hereditary chromosomal disorders

- Hypertension

This condition can strike both newborns and elderly people.

How is Strabismus treated?

Eye exams are very essential at any age. Eye abnormalities can be discovered, especially during prenatal screenings. One of these conditions is strabismus. If congenital, early detection is key to getting the best outcomes. Other strabismus conditions are thoroughly examined, and the best course of action is chosen based on the circumstance.

Treatment with Glasses: The use of spectacles can assist in the treatment of strabismus when it is not severe.

Closure Treatment: Closure treatment is administered if the patient’s eye is lazy. Laziness is reduced during specific times of the day when the healthy eye is specifically closed to allow the other eye to work harder.

Orthoptic Treatment: To improve the quality of vision in both eyes, exercises are performed.

Surgical Intervention: Using surgical procedures, the strength of the eye muscles is increased, decreased, or the action points of the muscles are modified in order to ensure the parallelism between the eyes and to treat strabismus. The eye is kept closed for one night, then opened and cleaned the following day. After 6-7 days, the patient is able to resume his/her normal routine. Drops can be used to lessen the redness that develops 3–4 weeks following surgery.

Seamless Strabismus Surgery: This surgery which is applied without any sutures offers a quicker healing period. A week after the surgery a significant improvement is seen in the eyes. But, if glasses are used, it is needed to continue.

Botox Treatment Method: Botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle that causes strabismus. At the end of the procedure, parallelism is restored in the eye. The effect of the Botox treatment method lasts for approximately 6 months. It is a preferred form of treatment for strabismus mostly due to nerve palsy and when special conditions occur.

What should I do after Strabismus Treatment?

Doctor’s instructions should be followed strictly after treatment. Also, regular checku-ups should be done to maintain eye parallelism permanently.
